_Iörmungandur was a monstrous snake, thrown into the ocean, where it blew out poisoned fumes, which in turn gave birth to countless other monster snakes. It was so huge that it spanned the whole earth and still could bite its own tail. Just as the earthquakes were attributed to the painful convulsions of the handcuffed Loki, so were the sea storms said to be due to the movements of the Midgard snake. At the dawn of the twilight of the gods, this monster, too, would free itself, and the waters of the sea would flood the land everywhere_

"Iörmungandur" was conceived in the week of October 1st - 5th, 1984, as a rhythmic ritual of no fixed, though preferably extremely long, duration.
This 56 minutes version was originally released on audio cassette (cut into two parts to fit the two sides of a C60 tape), as No. 4 in The Confrontation Project series, curated by Julie Smit and Ben Hollander in collaboration with the Staalplaat label, documenting a program on the Amsterdam pirate FM-radio station « radio GOT », broadcasting on 95.5 MHz.
It was recorded on October 5th, 1984, in our rehearsal studio in a squatted warehouse on the Amsterdam Levantkade.
The limited edition cassette release had a C60 cassette tape in a plastic jewel case with hand-colored cover, packed in a hand-colored cardboard box with a 12 page A5 sized hand-colored booklet.
The booklet contained a short story (in Dutch) written by Ronald Heiloo.
Tim Benjamin did the art-work.
The digital dowload comes with a pdf copy of the original booklet.
